WASHINGTON: The US Supreme Court on Tuesday weighs whether low-level crack cocaine offenders should benefit under a 2018 federal law that reduced certain prison sentences in part to address racial disparities detrimental to Black defendants. The nine justices are set to hear their final arguments of their nine-month term that began last October in a case involving a Florida man named Tarahrick Terry that tests the scope of the First Step Act signed into law by former President Donald Trump.
NEW DELHI: Slamming the Centre over its Central Vista project, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday said that at a time when people are grappling with the shortage of oxygen and vaccines in the country, it would be better if the government deploys all resources in saving lives instead of building a new house for the Prime Minister.
Her attack on the government came over reports that the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) has informed a government-appointed expert panel that the construction of the prime minister s residence under the ambitious Central Vista project will be completed by December 2022. At a time when the people of the country are struggling with shortage of oxygen, vaccines, hospital beds, medicines, it would be better if the government deploys all resources in saving the lives of the people, instead of building a new house for the PM at Rs 13,000 crore, Priyanka Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.
Mr. Mohammadali alleged that the detractors were rewarded by giving them party positions. The Congress in Aluva Assembly constituency has demanded the ouster of six-time MLA K. Mohammadali from the primary membership of the party alleging that he tried to scuttle the chances of Anwar Sadath, candidate of the United Democratic Front.
The call for expelling Mr. Mohammadali from the party is the culmination of the serious differences that emerged after the Left Democratic Front decided to field Shelna Nishad, his daughter-in-law as its independent candidate in the election. Mr. Sadath had won the constituency for the third consecutive time after defeating her by a margin of 18,886 votes.
